I would like to invite you to a screening of my film JARI MARI: Of Cloth and Other Stories (74 mins.) on 27th August, 2002 (Tuesday) at the India International Centre (IIC) auditorium, New Delhi, at approximately 8.15 p.m. This film is part of the Travelling Film South Asia (TFSA) package.



Jari Mari is a sprawling slum colony adjacent to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport. Its narrow lanes house hundreds of small sweatshops where women and men work, without the right to organise. Their existence is on the edge – their illegal dwellings could be demolished, at any time, by the airport authorities, and jobs have to be found anew everyday, from workshop to workshop. This film explores the lives of the people of Jari Mari, an almost invisible but crucial and expansive labour force, and attempts to interrogate the public profile of contemporary Mumbai.



The film has been invited to International Documentary Film Festivals at Yamagata, Japan, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Visions du reel, Nyon, Switzerland. Jari Mari: Of Cloth and Other stories was awarded the third best film prize at the Film South Asia Festival, Kathmandu.
