WorldSpace to Broadcast the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) to
Africa and Beyond


WSSD RADIO, the WorldSpace Summit Radio project will broadcast from Johannesburg

24 hours a day from 26 August through 4 September and will be developed through

a partnership between WorldSpace South Africa (Pty) Ltd. , The Department of

Environmental Affairs and Tourism and the National Community Radio Forum.



The World Summit on Sustainable Development provides Africa with an opportunity

to play a meaningful role in developing an agenda on sustainable development.

The challenge remains to ensure that the key messages developed prior to, during

and post summit, reach as many people on the continent.



WorldSpace South Africa (Pty) Ltd. will play an important role in aggregating,

contextualising and transmitting relevant content, based on the outcomes of the

WSSD, to the people of Africa, in order to provide Africans with insight into

the issues that affect their lives as a result of the decisions made at the 2002

WSSD.



The key elements of the format for the broadcast include:-

WorldSpace South Africa (Pty) Ltd. will deliver information in the form of radio

and data, via its AfriStar satellite, to the entire African continent and into

its coverage area in Europe and the UK. WSSD Radio will also be accessible on

portable WorldSpace receivers tuned into the World Summit Channel BCID 596.

However, we have gone the extra mile in ensuring that the greater portion of the

target audience that do not necessarily have WorldSpace receivers, will get the

transmission via the various terrestrial broadcasters that have partnered with

us.



The signal will be picked up by selected terrestrial broadcasters, who will then

utilise and relay the signal via their own local and international FM, Short

Wave and Medium Wave networks.  This will provide access to an already

established audience of over 200 million people across the African continent, at

a fraction of the cost of traditional transmission solutions.
