[cr-india] Query on CR from Pakistan...

Dear Ian,

My interest in Community Radio is quite recent but i certainly think it is
the only sensible way to proceed in countries like Pakistan where
electricity and illiteracy are major hurdles to information dissemination
and discussion. Radio transcends these problems and allows participation
from the majority of the populace in this country. This includes people not
only in the cities but also in towns and in the rural areas. It is the lack
of information that allows most of these people to be taken advantage of
and it is the lack of knowledge that keeps them from partipating in any
discourse that decides their fate and their future. It is what keeps the
true spirit of democracy from finding roots in our community.

I have been involved in communications for many years - print and new media
communications mainly but radio is something I think has been
under-utilized here. Radio Pakistan is, as I am sure you know, state
controlled. We do have an FM station but that is dedicated mainly to music
and quiz shows.

I am looking to learn about Community radio from people who have been
involved in it in countries like Inida, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The South Asia
list is therefore of great interest to me and I would appreciate it if you
would add my name to it.

Could I have some details regarding the Kathmandu Conference. I am afraid
it is slightly ill-timed because it falls on the same dates as Eid-ul-Azha,
a major family holiday for Muslims. However, please do send me the URL so
that I can read up on the details. Will the papers be put up on the site
subsequent to the conference? As I said in my message to Fred, I am keen to
start some initiatives in Pakistan soon and have been speaking with Dr.
Arun Mehta and Mr. Vickram Crishna of Radiophony to see if they could offer
advice, consultancy and/or training once things settle down a bit on our
borders.

I have not heard ofAmjad Rashid or the Taraqee Trust but then I don't know
of too many people who are based in Quetta.
