AIR FM rises glorious from the ashes
------------------------------------
TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2002 12:31:56 AM ]
LUCKNOW: The Lucknow station of the All India Radio is all set to create
history, by broadcasting live, the Amit Kumar Nite on October 5, to mark
the second anniversary celebrations of the FM channel. It will be for the
first time, since the start of radio broadcast, that a concert of a
professional artist would be aired live on radio.
After the Amit Kumar Nite, which is being organised by a private agency, AIR
Lucknow has plans to organise its own programmes and concerts and broadcast
them live to its audience. A proposal to organise a concert of Bollywood
artists at Lucknow Mahotsav also exists.
The FM channel has been a grand success for AIR Lucknow, both in terms of
revenue collection and in recapturing its urban audience. Launched in
August, 2000, the revenue collection through advertisements crossed the 8
digit figure in the first financial year itself. In 2001-2002 the revenue
was tripled and is expected to increase three-fold in the current fiscal. In
terms of audience, out of the roughly 2 crore listeners in the 80
kilometre circle of the FM band, 83 per cent radio lovers listen the FM
channel, according to an audience research survey conducted by AIR
recently. While 70 per cent of the rural population is already addicted to
FM, 89 per cent of urban radio listeners prefer the AIR FM channel.
The satisfaction rate is 98 per cent too, according to the survey. While 95
per cent of urban listeners were satisfied with the transmission and
programmes, the 100 per cent listeners in the rural area found the FM
channel satisfactory. However, two per cent of the urban population said
that they were partially satisfied.
The most crucial factor, which has clicked for the FM channel in cities, is
the local-centric approach and the interactive programmes. The people
get to know news and views about their city in the News Capsules and can
actually participate in the programmes being broadcast. This was the reason
why the Good Morning Lucknow programme was an instant hit after its launch
in June.
Director, AIR, Lucknow, Dr SK Grover, said that the quantity of
entertainment is more in the FM channel, which gives it an edge over the
other AIR channels, particularly in the cities. He said that while the main
aims of AIR are to broadcast programmes with education, information and
entertainment content, in the FM channel, the order has been reversed.

Vividhbharti to go FM way soon
TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2002 12:28:21 AM ]
LUCKNOW: Emboldened by its successful venture with its FM channel, the
Lucknow station of the All India Radio is now planning to air its
Vividhbharti service also, through Frequency Modulation or the (FM) band.
This technological switch-over, which will be completed in the current
five-year plan, will drastically improve the quality of transmission and
listeners would receive more sophisticated and refined stereophonic voice
on their radios.
