JAN PRASAR has scheduled a seminar on Community Broadcasting on September
12, 2002 from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm at India International Centre, New Delhi
(Conference Room II).
September 12 is special - the 12th anniversary of the day the Prasar
Bharati Act received the Presidential Assent in 1990 and also the 5th
anniversary of the day in 1997 (September 15) when it came into force.
The seminar participants would include broadcasting policy experts,
economists, social scientists, academicians, activists and media persons.
Mr Wijayananda Jayaweera , UNESCO Regional Communication Adviser for Asia
is to deliver the keynote address. Mr Ajit Bhattacharjea, Director, Press
Institute of India and founding edotor of Grassroots is to chair the
inaugural session.
In the last two decades UNESCO has done pioneering work on the theme of
community media. Jan Prasar like UNESCO recognises community broadcasting
as a medium of empowerment of the "voiceless", the "marginalised" and "at
the heart of communication and democratic processes within societies". Jan
Prasar recognises broadcasting as a public resource. We feel that community
broadcasting is very critical input to change the paradigm of broadcasting
in India as an enabling strategic instrument of socio-economic
transformation at the grassroots.
We would like you to attend the seminar and contribute to the deliberations.
Looking forward to your being with us.
With regards,
Yours sincerely,
Suhas Borker
Convenor
