Today's Times of India in Mumbai has a front page report that says
the government is putting the finishing touches to a policy that
will allow 5,000 community radio stations, each having a range of
4-5 km. There is a caustic comment that other countries with similar
policies have ensured that at least 8,000 such stations are allowed.
Once this document is ready, the WPC will get into the act to
allocate frequencies to each of these stations! Maybe the hon min
should take some trouble to ensure this only happens where there is
is a request for more than one station within 5 km.
The report also says that the educational institutions that run
these stations will have to fund the approximately Rs 10 lakhs
needed for installation. They will not be allowed to run commercials
(advertising).
A fine recipe for success.
