campaign on the elimination of racial discrimination planned
- news: a website to protest against the intimidation of journalists in

- 134 new programmes uploaded throughout January, 129 downloaded
- 671 members from 66 countries
- in January 30 new members joined from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Congo,
Colombia, Denmark, France, Ghana, India, Kenya, Kosovo, the Philippines,
South Africa, Spain, the UK, Ukraine and the United States
- visitors spent an average 17 minutes on the OneWorld Radio website

***Highlight: UNICEF/OneWorld 2002 Radio Prize***

We received a number of great programmes made by children for children so
far. Entries came from 16 countries around the globe. The deadline for
submitting a programme - the winner is going to be rewarded with
professional-quality radio equipment - has been postponed until the 20th of
February. The winner will be decided in late February. You will be able to
find out about the final decision online and in the next newsletter.

The Enchained Freedom, Guinea
This programme talks about the economic exploitation of children and what
should be done to prevent it. Despite the fact that the Convention on the
Rights of the Child has been signed by Guinea in 1990, not enough people
know the rights of a child and many of them are still violated. In French

Junior Magazine, Nigeria
The story of Linda illustrates how parents sometimes severely hurt the
feelings of their children without even noticing. This programme is
dedicated to reminding parents, society and governments of the importance of

Children's Voice - Street Children, Ukraine
The programme is dedicated to the problem of street children. It was made
with material collected in the course of a journalistic investigation made
by the child journalists of the Media Center and is part of a series
dedicated to this problem. In Ukrainian from the Independent Children's
Media Center.

GO! For Children of All Ages, UK
This programme ran weekly from May to December 2002 on Resonance FM. All the
content was provided by children from London's schools who were given an
open invitation to talk about their concerns. This is a highlight of the
series.

Tingog sa Kabataan - Voice of the Children
This programme in Tagalog is produced by 18 high school and college students
from Cebu City, all of whom are being assisted by various non-government
organisations, and some of whom have at one time been victims of different
forms of abuses. It's about children and young people's rights from ECPAT,
Philippines.

Van Gogh, The Rock Band
Van Gogh is a rock band based in Atlanta, Georgia. Three of the band's
members use wheelchairs including the founders, Robby and Rickie Heisner. In

different about the band as a result of their disabilities and, what isn't.

Independent Children's Media Center, "Children's Voice"
This project has been completely created and led by children (10-18 years
old) and was a winner of the competition "The Day of Innovative Ideas"
organized by the World Bank and UNICEF. The main idea of the project is to
present children's point of view on different problems concerning situation
of children in Ukraine and to develop their journalistic skills.

ECPAT Philippines
A non-profit organization which works towards the elimination of commercial
sexual exploitation of children. To achieve this mission, ECPAT Philippines
is supporting a group of children and youth broadcasters in a radio program
called "Tingog sa Kabataan" (Voice of the Children). Topics include child
rights and children's issues and concerns.

Youth Menace
Canada's only Child Welfare, Young Offender radio program for youth by youth
familiar with the youth justice system and/or child welfare system. Young
Offenders and Child Welfare children talk about the systems involved in
their lives and the difficulties they face including poverty, addiction,
mental health, housing, advocacy, and human rights.

Africa Scout Radio
A service based in Kenya aimed at promoting Scouting among young people in
Africa, especially those in remote areas where radio is the only effective
medium of communication. The mission of Scouting is to contribute to the
education of young people and to help build a better world where people are
self-fulfilled and play a constructive role in society.

ABC Ulwazi
ABC Ulwazi is an NGO that commits itself to providing professional training

Breathe Radio
An East London based community non-profit Internet based radio station.

Members Profile: Population Media Center Launches New Website
The Population Media Center is working with the mass media in various
countries to enlist them in the use of entertainment-education strategies
for promoting family planning, AIDS awareness and gender equality. The
website carries audio and video files to give the visitor an idea of the
Center's soap opera productions, like "Yeken Kignit", tackling the tasks
above, broadcast in Ethiopia. But it also provides a lot of text information
on population issues, gives information about PMC's regional media projects
and offers regular updates via mailing list. Check them out!

International Women's Day, March 8
The UN website states that "International Women's Day is the story of
ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old
struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In
ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to
end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty,
equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage."

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
This day is observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police
opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville,
South Africa, against the apartheid "pass laws". Proclaiming the Day in
1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble
its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. If you are
making a programme or are planning a special broadcast for that day, let us

The Free Patriotic Movement is preparing to officially start broadcasting
the "viewpoint of the opposition" from its fledgling off-shore Radio
Liberty, which concluded its one-month trial in December.

Tajikistan: Farmer to Farmer
A radio series (Az Dekhon ba Dekhon) that aims to respond to the concerns
and questions of farmers through interviews with farmers and a range of
agricultural experts. The 20- to 25-minute programme is broadcast each week
as part of Tajik Radio's lunchtime programme for rural listeners, and then
repeated in the evening.

1. We have changed the World AIDS Day page to Campaigns because we want to
report on ongoing activities and campaigns aiming at the fight against
HIV/AIDS and issues surrounding it. If you want to make a posting in the
working together section or are doing or developing an idea for a campaign,

2. Throughout January 17 new programmes were uploaded to the database; the
site had 56 downloads; 9 new members joined; the website had 2,538 visitors
who stayed on the site for an average of 23:21 minutes

OneWorld Radio SouthEast Europe (SEE)

OneWorld Radio SEE is in the process of the re-design. We want to fully
merge with OneWorld Radio on one hand and with the OneWorld SEE portal [soft
launched in early February] on the other as we are wrapping up this project.
The re-design means that when you login on www.oneworld.net/radio/see in
March, you will find a website that resembles OneWorld Radio. In addition,
all materials and details of OneWorld Radio SEE members will be stored in
and searchable from the global OneWorld Radio database. You will also notice
that we added a new language - Roma.

Audio upload:
- The preferred format is MP3. Real Audio format is also accepted, but no
other formats.
- We advise you to choose the following settings for digitising audio: mono
channel, 16 bit, 22 050 sample rate, 64 Kbps FM Radio Quality Audio
- The file size limit is 3.6 MB. If your files are bigger than that, please
split them in different parts.
- If the upload does not work you can contact us at radio at oneworld.net

- You can change your member details: After you logged in by entering your
username and password in the login box in the top right handside corner,
you'll see the box changed and displays the name of the contact person and
your organisation. To edit your organisation/contact person details simply
click on the name of the organisation.
