AIR to sell airtime on phased out Medium Wave and FM
transmitters
Vinod Behl , July 04, 03

All India Radio has decided to sell airtime on its old Medium Wave
and FM transmitters that are on the verge of being phased out.
About 20 such transmitters are to be phased out by AIR in 2 years
time.
Under the new policy initiated by Prasar Bharati, AIR is giving
airtime to non-commercial institutes, government departments,
Universities, NGOs on 1 KW capacity MW transmitters and 5 KW
capacity FM transmitters, managed and operated by it.
According to the policy guidelines, sale of airtime is to be done
for one year on first come first served basis. AIR will be giving
time slots for non-commercial programmes for 8-10 hours a day
depending on the capacity of the transmitters. The programmes
broadcast on 1kw MW transmitter can be available in 20 km radius
while those on 5 kw FM transmitter can cover 30-40 km radius. AIR
will be charging a fee of about Rs. 25 lakh per annum for booking
time slots on MW transmitter while the slots on FM transmitter
will cost Rs. 45-50 lakh. Those who book time slots on the phased
out transmitters will have to follow AIR's programming code.
AIR has already booked time slots from MANAGE Institute on MW
transmitter in Hyderabad. According to H.O. Srivastava, Chief
Engineer and Head, AIR Resources, currently programme slots are
available on two MW transmitters in Chandigarh and one each at
Baroda and Calicut. The slots on FM transmitters will be available
in about a year's time. AIR, according to Srivastava, will also be
giving its studios on hire at some places for programme
production.
AIR expects good response to its scheme that requires no license
fee no capital investment and no long term commitment.
