In desperate times, AIR turns to good old Sayani

NEW DELHI: Way back in 1939 he first lent his voice to Akashvani. Since then Ameen Sayani continues to undertake projects for All India Radio (AIR) for which he doesn't necessarily get paid by the official broadcaster.

Since then much has changed and AIR has been facing the heat of competition from private radio channels ever since the Government decided to free its frequencies for private players.

So what does AIR do? Look for ways to keep the money flowing in. To begin with, they cut a deal with Indian Airlines a few months ago and offered to train its cabin crew in voice modulation. ``We made a couple of lakhs training the cabin crew in diction, pronunciation and voice modulation,'' said sources in AIR.

It's time to cut another deal and AIR is looking up to Sayani. With a little help from the man with the golden voice, they will launch workshop VANI _ Voice Articulation and Newstraining Initiative _ an intensive training for those who want to be radio jockeys and newscasters.

While AIR is keen to rope in Sayani, he says he is hardpressed for time. But there is one thing he would like them to do right away. Pay him a pension now for all the development works he has undertaken for the official broadcaster. ``I think I deserve a pension for the work I have done,'' he said.

AIR is planning to come out with a rule book on voice modulation, something that Sayani can take pride in, given that way back in the '50s, when Radio Ceylon invited him over after he had spent close to 30 years anchoring programmes like 'Binaca Geet Mala' for the radio, he had formulated a rule book for Radio Ceylon. ``I don't know whether it is the same book but my notebook dealt with what is required in radio anchoring,'' says Sayani.

While AIR failed to pick Sayani sooner, private station RED FM roped him in along with other greats like Usha Uthup.
