Hello from Hilversum,

First of all, a reminder that this Sunday, 26 October, we begin our new 
winter transmission schedule. Apart from cuts in the number of 
transmitter hours on shortwave, forced on us by budget reductions 
affecting all public broadcasters in the Netherlands, there are changes 
to the starting times of our broadcasts in English, which now begin on 
the hour instead of the half hour. For our listeners in Europe, we have 
been forced to discontinue the lunchtime English shortwave transmission 
in analogue mode, though there are DRM transmissions available for the 
lucky few of you who alreday have the means of listening to them. All

If you're a digital satellite listener in Europe, note that we will 
have a 24 hour dedicated English stream in stereo on Astra 1G. Select 
RNW2 on your EPG. The same stream will be available in Real Audio on 
our Web site.

Tactical retreat

The decision of Israeli offshore broadcaster Arutz 7 to switch off its 
radio transmitters after being declared illegal under new government 
legislation has taken most observers by surprise. It is out of 
character for the people behind the strongly Orthodox station to give 
in so easily. So are they really going off the air, or is this merely a 
tactical retreat?

Media Newsdesk

To coincide with the start of the winter broadcasting season, we're 
changing the way we publish media news. Starting from Sunday 26 
October, ALL breaking media news stories will appear as items in the 
NEW Media Network Weblog at http://medianetwork.blogspot.com. The 
existing Media Newsdesk on our main Web site will be updated once a 
week, and will include more analysis.

This week we've reported on these stories:

A solution has been found to the limbo in which over half a million 
satellite TV households were left when the BBC decided not to renew its 
encryption contract with BSkyB.

The Spanish section of Radio Taiwan International will be testing on 
3955 kHz in the 75 metre band at 2100-2200 UTC on 26, 27 and 28 October.

The future of radio as a medium is at stake unless it goes digital, 
claimed Jenny Abramsky, Director of BBC Radio & Music.

Following the resumption of broadcasts from its own shortwave 
transmitter, Radio New Zealand International has now ended its 
temporary relays over a transmitter leased from Radio Australia.

France is to get its first English-language radio station after the 
state broadcasting authority CSA issued a licence for Paris Live Radio 
to start broadcasting from December.

The Dutch domestic radio listening figures for August/September were 
published on Monday.
