Dear Mr Victor,

I would like to know details on the Kurnool Community Radio programme. How they launched, their methodology, success, the issues they were addressing, since when, whether still continuing?

Regards

Geeta Malhotra, PFI

I have some reservations on the results of audience research of the mass media. It will always have a very high pereecntage of listeners/ viewers. Readership surveys are better, since it has some sort of scientific sampling, which will be discussed i public, whereas other audience research will not reveal the sampling procedure; but only declare the percentage of watching. Who ever is decalring the results, they have to first tell the sampling procedure and media reach of the programme. Then among them, perecntage of watching/ litening may be discussed. Otherwise, it simply a futile exercise. Only the announcing party can be happy with their results. B.P. Thiagarajan ----- Ori ginal Message -----

So rural Doordarshan"s audience research wing studied the impact of DD's rural development programmes on rural households. It then announced happily that 59 per cent of the rural audience in the country was watching its agriculture programme, and 48 per cent was watching Grameen Bharat. And what did the sample size consist of? Rural households (sic) in the cities of Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Patna, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati.
