Shortwave was vital in Sri Lanka in the first 48 hours after the 
tsunami struck. It fell to the island's Amateur Radio Union, led by 
Media Network collaborator Victor Goonetilleke, to move in to the 
Prime Minister's office and ensure that communications could be 
maintained. Some of Victor's friends went to the devastated area and 
set up shortwave transmitters on the amateur radio bands. But the 
experience has led Victor and his amateur radio friends to be 
concerned about what the future holds. The problem lies in the plans 
for Broadband over Power Lines (BPL). But why aren't the broadcasters 
doing more to raise public awareness of the threat?
