Tune into the youth brigade

MOP Vaishnav College for Women in Chennai is launching a community radio
station on March 12. It is called MOP FM at 91.2.
It is an initiative by the students for the student community in Chennai
city, Nirmala Prasad, principal, MOP Vaishnav College has said.
'It is the first among private colleges in the country to obtain an
operating license to run a community radio station. It will broadcast
between 6 a.m and 7 a.m with a repeat broadcast at 6.00 p.m,' she said.
According to Ms Prasad, the programmes will be in English, Tamil and Hindi
and they will be based on public interest. The main objectives would be
community service education, entertainment, information and development.
Interviews, documentaries docu-dramas, plays and other interactive
programmes will be broadcast. All these programmes are conceptualized and
produced by students themselves, she said.
Ms Prasad said the radio's content will reflect local flavour and to
maintain quality of the content, Vijaya Thiruvengadam former director, All
India Radio, has been appointed as consultant for the radio.
According to Haridas, secretary of the college an audio studio with
state-of-the-art technology has been set up at the college.
'We at the MOP aim to channelise youth power to the benefit of society. The
community radio would cover the city of Chennai', MOP Vaishnav is also
coming out with a fortnightly - Yuvashakthi, aimed at the youth.
Haridas said the newspaper would serve as a forum for students to express
their views and bring to light issues concerning the youth. It will cover
events of various schools and colleges.
Dr Arun Nigavekar, chairman, University Grants Commission will inaugurate
the FM radio station while Professor S P Thiyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor,
University of Madras will release Yuvashakthi.
