Kerala tunes in to first campus community radio

KERALA'S first campus-based community FM radio station will be set up at the DCSMAT Media School-Thiruvananthapuram. 

The radio station, named Radio DC, is expected to start operations early next year, said Mr K. Kunhikrishnan Director, DCSMAT Media School. It is being set up as part of the School's post-graduate diploma course in media studies and convergence. To be run by students, the radio station's programming mix will include education and entertainment-based programmes, he explained. This service will cover an 8-km area, he added. 

With the number of private, commercial FM radio stations set to increase under the Government's FM radio policy, the demand for trained radio professionals would increase, Mr Kunhikrishnan said. Kerala alone is set to have 17 commercial FM radio stations once the second round of bidding for licences is completed, he pointed out. "The campus-based community FM radio station will be a strong point of DSCMAT Media School," he said. Students of the institutionwill gain hands-on experience of running a radio station. Similarly, the institution will have the latest television and animation facilities, he added. 

Admissions to the one-year course are currently on, he said. The institution will also launch a series of short, professional development courses early next year, Mr Kunhikrishnan said. On the anvil are courses in television and radio presentation, writing and post-production. The institution also plans to rent out its television and radio production facilities, he added. 

Set up by the DC Kizhakkemuri Foundation, the DCSMAT Media School is located at the Kinfra Film and Video Park in the suburbs of Thiruvananthapuram. Besides educational programmes, the institution plans a media museum and research facilities.
