2. Community Radio as Participatory Communication in Post-Apartheid South
Africa
This paper evaluates the evolution of community radio in post-apartheid
South Africa where a three-tier broadcasting system - public, commercial,
and community has replaced the monopoly of a state-run behemoth, the South
African Broadcasting Corporation. The paper commences with an overview of
South Africa's institutionalised culture of exclusion in the broadcasting
sector and in other social spheres.

3. Ghana National Agricultural Information Network system (GAINS) - Ghana
The Ghana National Agricultural Information Network system (GAINS) uses
Winneba based community radio station and Radio Peace as information
intermediaries to disseminate research findings to farmers. GAINS uses the
information intermediaries to boost agricultural livelihoods in Ghana.
GAINS provides the Agona Swedru Agricultural Information Centre with a
series of manuals on VHS videocassette on topics ranging from grasscutter
production, snails, poultry farming, mushrooms and seedling production.

4. Mo Kamba (My Mate) - Angola
The Mo Kamba (My Mate) project is radio based and consists of radio spots
in six different languages and two weekly discussion programmes in
Portuguese, each of which is recorded live and is approximately one hour
in length. The show targets sexually active Angolan youth and aims to
change behaviour to reduce the prevalence of HIV and AIDS. The spots and
programmes are broadcast on RNA's national Channel A, Radio Luanda, and by
each of the RNAs affiliated provincial network of FM stations.

5. Zinduka! (Wake up!) - Tanzania
This family planning radio soap opera was developed as part of a larger
project called "Laying the Foundation: Family Planning IEC", which was a
collaboration between the Health Education Division of the Ministry of
Health of Tanzania and The Johns Hopkins University/Population
Communication Services (JHU/PCS). Zinduka addresses men and women who do
not usually attend health facilities. It aims to promote positive
attitudes toward family planning, reproductive health and women's
empowerment and educate women and men of reproductive age about the
health benefits of modern contraceptive use.

6. Community Media, Communications Tariffs and Convergence
This 55-page report forms part of a research project exploring community
multimedia policy. This research is based on a survey of a majority of
operating community radio stations that are members of the NCRF, as well
as input from a number of experts in the sector who are sympathetic to the
community media.

7. Kimasomaso - East Africa

series which explores sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues with and

8. Youth Radio for Peacebuilding: A Guide
The Youth RAdio for Peacebuilding guide provides tools which can help
radio professionals produce youth programmes for peacebuilding. The guide
is the result of a workshop organised by the Radio for Peacebuilding,
Africa project in Accra, Ghana, in September 2005.

9. Media for Sustainable Development Content Survey
A Baseline Study Report On Sustainable Development Content/Themes For
Community Radio Stations in Africa and Central America
Community radio is based on the principles of community development and
community participation. It therefore goes without saying that the main
commitment and mandate for community radio is to produce programming on
themes that will contribute to the development of the communities that
they serve. This report is an account of data/information collected from
participating community radio stations and their experiences with
sustainable development topics. This study was undertaken by both AMARC
and Panos, respectively .

10. Radio Talkshows for Peacebuilding: A Guide
Radio talkshows are becoming the most influential form of media and a
great many of them, those that use conflicts and disagreements as a way of
attracting listeners, risk doing more harm than good. This guidebook is
designed to help talkshow presenters and producers learn some new skills
to deal with conflict effectively on air.

11. Womens Access to Radio in Mali
This study aims to assess the level of womens access to information
through radio as a whole and to a radio set in particular. The study also
helps to look into womens listening practices, unfulfilled information
needs, their most favorite programs and the possible effects and impacts
of radio on womens level of access to information. The study did not
collect any data on mens access to information through radio. However,
other studies, in particular the Kénéya Ciwara baseline survey, showed
that the men had a greater access to radio than women.

12. Story, Story - Voices from the Market - Nigeria
Launched as part of Voices, a national public education broadcasting
project for Nigeria, Story, Story - Voices from the Market is a radio
drama that uses storylines and true-to-life characters to encourage debate
amongst its listeners about local and global issues. The drama explores
issues such as poverty, governance, HIV/AIDS and domestic issues and
prompts debate, contributing to a public discussion.

13. Partnership and Resource Mobilization for Farmer, Research, and Radio
Linkages
This resource kit is aimed at farmers, researchers and rural radio
broadcasters in Africa. It aims to support and service the linkages
between farmers, researchers and rural radio broadcasters by investigating
and developing partnerships to promote improved access to knowledge
generated by agricultural research. The resource kit explores issues
around access to appropriate information for farmers and the use of radio
as an alternative technology for facilitating the education and
empowerment of the poor, including women and youth.

14. Eating Out Safely Radio Programmes [CD]
This CD contains a series of short audio features on foodsafety of
informally vended foods. The audio features were made in September 2005
through a collaboration between the Zambia National Broadcasting
Corporation (ZNBC), the BBC, a coalition of partners in Zambia led by the
National Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research and including
Lusaka City Council and the Natural Resources Institute of the University
of Greenwich.
