TIRUCHI: The Holy Cross FM campus community radio, the first of its kind to
be operated by an arts and science college in central and southern
districts, will be on air for two hours every day from December 19, 2006.

At 90.4 Mega Hertz frequency modulation that would reach a radius of 16 km,
the radio intends to have students, home makers, working women, children,
men and youth as the participatory community from 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. and
from 5.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. The radio will function from the `Video Studio'
on the premises.

Considering community radio as an essential tool for betterment of
community, the college has enlisted the support of agricultural experts to
discuss issues of daily interest to farmers such as vagaries of weather and
fluctuating crop prices; and experienced teachers to handle programmes on
communication skills.

Having obtained license from the Central Government in September to operate
the radio, the college has entrusted the task of designing and producing the
programmes.

Students of Visual Communication will do the editing work.

The community radio would serve as a forum for students to exhibit and
develop their talents to design and produce programmes.

"We have formed exclusive groups in all departments for coming up with
innovative programmes on a sustained basis," the Principal, Sr. Rosy, told
presspersons on Friday.

The students have created a reserve of programmes for 10 days on a handful
of topics, including agriculture, English learning, sports, health, quiz,
and variety entertainment through skit and poems.

The college has spent Rs. 8 lakh for erecting the transmitter and purchase
of broadcast equipment.
