On the lines of Madras University, Madurai Kamaraj
University (MKU) will also have a community radio,
courtesy Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU).

IGNOU is likely to ink a pact with Madurai Kamaraj
University to install a Frequency Modulation (FM)
studio in the MKU campus, for which spadework is on.
The Electronic Media Production Centre (EMPC), a media
wing of IGNOU, that serves as a nodal resource centre
in production, dissemination and transmission of
educational software in the country, utilising a wide
range of communication tools and techniques, is
entrusted with the task of setting up a Gyan Vani
station (local FM) in Madurai.

EMPC has been undertaking transmission of educational
and enrichment audio programmes through the dedicated
local FM radio network from 17 Gyan Vani stations
across the country, including two (Chennai and
Coimbatore) in Tamil Nadu.

Gyan Vani is an interactive mode that enhances and
supplements the teaching-learning process by reaching
out to the learners through a low-cost popular mass
medium. These stations broadcast day-to-day programmes
with the contribution of various educational
institutions, NGOs, Government and quasi-government
organisations.

While IGNOU transmits educational programmes in
collaboration with the All India Radio in Chennai, its
partner institution at Coimbatore is G R Damodaran
college of Science where the university pays for
utilising the infrastructure of the college.

Having identified MKU as its partner institution to
set up FM studio, the authorities of both the
universities have held initial discussions in this
regard. “MKU will provide physical space for
establishing the studio in its campus, while IGNOU,
besides installing the equipment running to Rs 50 lakh
will bear the running expenditure,” says an MKU
official.

The areas of focus in this collaborative venture would
be Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, primary and secondary,
adult, technical and vocational, distance education
and higher and extension education and NGO training
programmes. The medium of communication would be
bi-lingual (English and Tamil) and the broadcast
duration would be eight hours initially though “timing
is not a constraint”.

According to an IGNOU official, the response for the
Coimbatore project has been overwhelming. Programmes
exclusively for school children and aspirants of
competitive examinations have proved to be successful.

Sources say that the process of constituting a
steering committee comprising experts from various
fields as members is on. The committee would clear the
programmes to be aired covering a radius of 70 km.

Now that the partner institution has been identified
and initial rounds of talk over with the Directorate
of Distance Education, MKU, the studio would be
commissioned in two months, sources say.

Apart from Madurai, IGNOU has identified Tiruchy and
Tirunelveli towns to establish Gyan Vani stations.
