Int'l media mission arriving in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, March 17 - An International media mission comprising 
twelve international organizations is arriving in Kathmandu on March 
20 on a five day visit to assess the situation of press freedom and 
freedom of expression.

The media mission is scheduled for March 20-25.

The mission had visited Nepal in July 2005 earlier in support of the 
media community and the forthcoming mission is said to be a 
continuation of this process, said the International Federation of 
Journalists (IFJ) in a statement issued on Friday.

The mission members are expected to meet with government officials, 
civil society members, media community members, security officials 
and party leaders and take stock of the media situation.

Besides this the mission is scheduled to visit three districts- 
Pokhara, Surkhet and Biratamod and meet with local media persons 
followed by a press conference in Kathmandu on 24 March.

The international media mission include: ARTICLE 19, Free Voice, 
International Federation of Journalists, International Freedom of 
Expression Exchange - IFEX, International Media Support, 
International News Safety Institute, International Press Institute, 
Reporters Sans Frontiers, South Asia Press Commission, United Nations 
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - UNESCO, World 
Association of Community Radio Broadcasters - AMARC and World Press 
Freedom Committee.

Three other international organisations, Committee to Protect 
Journalists, Press Institute of India and World Association of 
Newspapers are also supporting the return mission in March 2006, said 
the statement.

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists will coordinate with the 
visiting media mission in collaboration with a group of twenty-eight 
Nepalese organisations, institutes and networks said the statement.
