This Vasundhara Vahini at Baramati was put to
excellent use in February during an International
Symposium on Grape Cultivation.

Around 50 sceinetists and grape cultivators from all
over the world presented their papers in this
symposium. Symposium was attended by more than a
thousand grape farmers- most of them from Maharashtra.

The organisers knew that the farmers did not undestand
English very well, especially that of International
experts. Therefore they provided a small FM radio
receiver set with ear pohones in the conference kit
(which incidentally was a rucksack that can be
attached to a motorbike).

The farmers were asked to use this kit to listen to
instant/simultaneous translation of presentations on
'Vasundhara Vahini'. This received wonderful response
from farmers. Even Mr. Sharad Pawar and other
dignitaries listened to the simultaneous translation
for a while during the inaugural session.

Some participants, not wanting to be restricted to the
conference hall, were seen roaming around the campus
with plugs in their ears. Farmers in the vicinity who
could not pay the hefty registration charges also
benifited from these broadcasts as they could listen
to the station at home/farm.

Anagha Bhat and I (Ujjwala Barve- former AIR
broadcaster)worked as simultaneous translators cum
broadcasters. Believe me it was not an easy
assignment. For two reasons- one, we are no experts in
grape cultivation and two, the prints of
presentations/speeches were not made available to us
before. We were provided with Close Circuit television
and ear phones to listen to the speeches. But we
managed.

This unique attempt demonstrated yet another use of
commuity radio I guess.
