On Saturday, a media tour was arranged to the dds radio station at machnoor
village, near pastapur, in Medak district of A.P. Among the media
organizations that were represented were: NDTV, CNN-IBN, TV-9, Sahara, The
Hindu, Times of India, Financial Express, AIR, BBC Urdu News. Apart from PV
Satheesh, the director of DDS, B.P. Sanjay and I were also on hand to answer
questions. The station had a celebratory look, with floral decorations and
colorful rangoli. I can't say 'General Narsamma and her colleagues were
particularly elated at the policy announcement, but 'general' seemed
relieved that their long wait would hopefully end soon. The media
observed the studio recordings in progress, interacted with 'general' and
her colleagues.
On Sunday, Kanchan Kumar and I were studio guests of Sahara-Rashtriya
(National) in Hyderabad. They did a 30-min live programme titled, "Apni
Aawaz" from 6.30 -7.00 pm, using their visit to Pastapur the previous day as
a peg. The Delhi anchor did a fairly decent job of giving a backgrounder to
the policy, mentioned Budhikote, Jharkhand, KMVS as well. The Hyderabad
reporter did a story on the DDS radio station. Kanchan plugged away in
fluent Hindi about the concept/philosophy, the various experiments, their
impact, the role of cr lobbying, etc. I managed, in spite of my very
inadequate Hindi, to make a pitch for the government to set up a community
radio support fund as part of the XI Plan so that smaller NGOs could apply
for seed money.
