    PUNE: Radio channel Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM organised a unique public event
on the occasion of World Environment Day on Tuesday to test the level of
environmental consciousness and sensitiveness among people on the streets.

 Termed as the test of Pollution Under Control (PUC) quotient of the common
people, the 12-hour long show saw around 50 people from all walks of life
interviewed by Radio Mirchi's RJs Aditi, Neha and Manasi. The show was aired
live in real time.

 The event was held to make people aware of the growing level of pollution
in the ecosystem and on how they can contribute to keep the environment
green and clean. The RJs asked three questions to all the interviewees:
their individual mode of transportation (by public transport or individual
vehicle); use of plastic bags and the last time they had planted a sapling.

 Each person was given a rating according to his or her answer, which
reflected their way of life and sensitivity to the environment. Those with
better understanding of the problem got a 'low count of pollution'. On the
other hand, people with a 'high pollution count' were given a sapling and
made to promise 'live on air' to mend their ways in future.

 The best PUC quotient was of Seema Sardeshpande, corporator of the Pune
Municipal Corporation (PMC), who walks to office, does not use plastic bags
and has last planted a sapling three months back. "Being a public
representative, I believe that I have extra responsibility to set an
example," she said.

 Another public servant with a perfect score on the PUC count was traffic
constable Ravindra Naik, who uses public transport to commute, uses a cloth
bag for shopping and has his own kitchen garden at his Kondhwa residence.

 There were others like Max, a DJ from NIBM road, who plants a sapling every
time he composes a new song.

 There was punishment aplenty for others found low on environmental
sensitivity. Kailash Gondwe, a 20-something shopkeeper at Swargate, had to
do sit-ups as he failed in all three counts and promised to rectify himself.


 The Mirchi group covered Prabhat road, Bhandarkar road, Shanipar,
Shaniwarwada, Appa Balwant chowk, NIBM road, Lal Bahadur Shastri road,
Swargate, Bibwewadi, Kondhwa, Wanowrie and Camp during the day-long event.
