MANGALORE: It was an article in a newspaper about
Radio Abhimani Sangha of Bangalore in 2005 which
caught U. Rama Rao’s attention. 

An avid radio listener himself, Mr. Rao, has ventured
to set up a “Radio Listeners’ Club” here with support
from his wife Savithri Rama Rao and a few like-minded
people. The club will be inaugurated at a function
here on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said he
started listening to radio, especially carnatic music,
Binaca Geet Mala and cricket commentary at the age of
15 years and the passion had stuck ever since. 

Stating that his routines, even today, began with
listening to programmes on All India Radio, Mangalore
station, Mr. Rao said he wanted to popularise radio
listening as an activity among households in the city.

On his future plans, he said: “I have drawn up a
five-year plan to popularise radio-listening. 

We will organise frequent interaction between
association members and AIR announcers. 

Many listeners may not have visited AIR studio and
many talented people may not have got a chance to
perform there. It will be the club’s endeavour to
fulfil the dreams of such listeners and artists.” 

He said the club would not charge any membership fee. 

However, donations would be accepted to meet the
expenses of various activities. The club proposed to
provide transistors to needy students and the visually
challenged. 

The authorities concerned would be approached to
ensure that every park in the city had a radio. “AIR
has provided a radio for Kadri Park here,” he said. 

On his preference to transistor over radio, Mr. Rao
said: “Transistor is handy and can be carried
anywhere. It runs on battery which is not expensive.”
P. Jayaram Bhat, chief general manager, Karnataka Bank
Ltd., will inaugurate the club. Vasanth Kumar Perla,
programme executive, AIR, will preside.
