[cr-india] SPECTRUM FEE HIKE

There has not been mutual understanding and agreement among all stake-holders, some even dividing campus & ngo stations. Fact is all are community stations, and we need to work together. It is sad to know that some have already paid Rs. 91,000/! Unfortunate.CRA seemed to have decided to pay Rs. 19,700/-, but probably their decisions are not circulated on emails! If there is greater coordination between CRF & CRA, things might work out better.
I would rather prefer to pay the usual fee (19,000/) and pressurize the ministry to rollback completely.

The fact that many campus stations are already in tow to the government for manifold issues that have nothing to do with radio or community will, sadly, play a role in their decision to pay the hiked fee or not. It would be naked extortion, but nudity is also probably among the many subjects that will not find a hearing on CR, with Big Brother breathing down their necks.    Vickramhttp://communicall.wordpress.comhttp://vvcrishna.wordpress.com

I agree with that action, Vasuki. I'm just not sure if all stations would go along with it.

Gurgaon Ki Awaaz is the first and only civil-society-led community radio station in the National Capital Region of Delhi. Since 2009, we have been broadcasting 22X7, in Hindi and Haryanvi, with a team of community reporters who generate community content with community participation.

Dear Arti,
Are you suggesting that campus radio stations don't feel the pinch? I'm sure several campus radio stations including ours may not be in a position to pay the five-fold increase. I would therefore suggest that we simply refuse to pay up the spectrum fee and go ahead and broadcast.

Vasuki,
I'm not sure if there is agreement among CR stations about this. I'm sure if one was to do a survey about this (literally pick up the phone and ask CR stations about their stand) a clear picture will emerge. I believe, in informal discussions, many campus stations don't really have an issue with the spectrum fee hike.

What will/can the government do if all the 140 odd stations decide to continue to broadcast without paying the spectrum fee? Will they shut down all the stations?

Like they say in Hindi 'Laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahi mante'.

I think all the stations should simply refuse to pay any spectrum fee and continue to broadcast.
Warm regards
