among farmers in Madurai. It was set up in December 2011 to

DoT SEEKS TRAI'S SUGGESTION ON SPECTRUM LEVY FOR SATELLITE
SERVICES: It has also sought TRAI's suggestions on pricing of
spectrum in cases where it can not be discovered through
auction, including cases of non-commercial usage, capitive
usage by commercial entities and usage for social purposes,
such as community radio. Currently, these spectrum is
allocated at administrative prices.

I&B MINISTRY STATISTICS; 163 CR STATIONS: The Information
and Broadcasting Ministry, GoI said that community radio is
also a key thrust area. The number of operational community
radio stations has increased from 64 in 2009 to 163 in 2014,
the ministry said.

MAKING RADIO FUTURE-PROOF [Hindustan Times]: To
celebrate World Radio Day, we look at some unique
initiatives which cater to the needs of various
communities across India. 1. Queer radio: In a
bid to support queer culture, Anil Srivatsa, CEO
and co-founder of the Radiowalla Network Pvt. Ltd,
started a gay-centric community web radio channel
called Q radio, a first-ever in India, giving voice
to members of the LGBT community. The radio
channel, which started operating from Bengaluru,
went live in September last year. 2. By women,
for women Mann Deshi is a micro-credit bank in
Mhaswad village in Satara district of Maharashtra.
An initiative of a foundation with the same name,
it was set up with an objective of empowering local
women by imparting entrepreneurial skills through
its non-financial services. In a bid to reach out
to women to make them aware about its programs, the
organization, in 2009, came up with the idea of
starting its own community radio station called
Mann Deshi Tarang. 3. Giving voice to the
northeast: With Jnan Tarang, the north-east of
India got its first ever community radio service.
Operational from the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State
Open University in Guwahati since November 2010, it
was the dream project of Dr. Ankuran Dutta (33), a
former lecturer at the university.

RADIO GAGA IN RED HUBS -- TWO OF NINE NEW STATIONS IN
JHARKHAND [The Telegraph]: The Centre has given up its
earlier apprehensions and finally agreed to set up community
radio stations in some of the most notorious red-corridors to
give voice to those living in these Naxalite-hit regions.
Nine such radio stations are expected to come up in Jharkhand
and Chhattisgarh in the next few months, the first one in
Bastar, a Maoist bastion in the neighbouring state.

UAS COMMUNITY RADIO TO START STUDENT TALENT SHOW: How does
one tap talent in rural areas and at the same time popularize
a community radio? The University of Agricultural Sciences,
Dharwad, has hit upon a novel idea to do both: to broadcast
the talent hunt show for students on its community radio and
thereby popularizing the radio. The Krishi community radio
is used to educate the farmers, school dropouts and Self-Help
Groups (SHG) on agriculture- and health-related issues. But

pay Rs 200 per half-an-hour's broadcasting to students.

AL PEOPLE: A
district-wide radio campaign on a programme that
envisages conferment of land titles to every tribal
household in the district under the comprehensive
programme on land rights to tribal people was
launched at Koraput. The radio campaign on the
land allocation programme being aired on Dhemsa
Community radio targets to reach the nook and
corner of the district, Samarth Verma,
Sub-Collector of Koraput, said. The USP of the
locally run community radio was its language
'desia' that was commonly spoken and followed by
the tribal people of the district, he added.

CONSUMER HELPLINE TO BE LAUNCHED ON COMMUNITY RADIO: India's
first community radio based consumer helpline would be
launched at Nuh, Mewat, Haryana by Secretary, Department of
Consumer Affairs, Government of India, Pankaj Agrawalal on
January 15, 2014. This helpline would be managed by Mewat
based community radio station, Radio Mewat. The consumer
helpline on community radio is an innovation to raise
awareness amongst consumers in a community. They can call
radio's helpline number and leave a message, talk to a radio
reporter or even come on live with their complaint. In Mewat
over 500,000 people will be able to take advantage of the
helpline by calling the number 8685904904. Radio Mewat will
document these cases and pass it on to agencies that can sort
out these grievances. The radio will also commit a 30 minute
slot to a consumer rights' program where consumers will have
a live show to discuss problems. The major issues such as
sale of expired goods particularly medicines, sale of goods
without bills, misleading advertisements etc. will be taken
up. Awareness about the benefits of bills would go a long in
creating a demand for bills and also benefit the State.

VIT (VELLORE) COMMUNITY RADIO LAUNCHED: Community radio
should focus on programmes aimed at development of the
society and youth, who form a large chunk of India's
population, said R. Sarath Kumar, film actor, Tenkasi MLA
and president of the All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi
(AISMK). He was inaugurating the VIT Community Radio (CR)
90.8 and the Multimedia and Animation Studio at the VIT

as part of a colonial, archaic mindset that needed to be

THE RURAL CONNECT [Indian Express]: This community radio
station (CRS) at Anugondanahalli is so popular that people
don't allow them to sign off. In its one and a half year of
its existence, Sarathy Jhalak in Hoskote taluk has come a
long way in taking developmental issues to the doorsteps of
the community, however, floundering when it comes to the
issue of getting help to sustain themselves. Unlike other
community radio stations in Karnataka, Sarathy Jhalak tunes
in from six in the morning to 10.30 in the night with a mix
of live and recorded programming. The brain behind FM 90.4,
Shamantha Mani, a media professional and author says that
their radio station has successfully caught the air waves
when it comes to the issue of coverage area and reach which
is from Whitefield to Karnataka- TN border Bagur. But they
are heavily weighed down by financial constraints and their
inability to pay their programming staff.

PLAN TO START COMMUNITY RADIO IN ASSAM [The Telegraph]: The
Assam government today signed an MoU with Krishna Kanta
Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) to set up community
radio stations throughout the state. The department of
information and public relations will be the funding agency
for the project while the open university will be the
implementing agency. The university launched its own
community radio in 2011 followed by Gauhati University the

CUTTACK UNIVERSITY RADIO TO GO ON AIR [Times of India]: After
lying defunct for more than a year, Ravenshaw Radio, the
state's first campus community radio, will restart its
services on Friday. November 15 is also the foundation day
of Ravenshaw University. "We have got all licences required
to run the radio service," said university's vice-chancellor
Prof B C Tripathy. The radio service, launched in April
2011, went off air in February, 2012, after it was found that
it had been in operation without an appropriate licence from
the Union communications and information technology ministry.
