MANGALORE: The department of mass communication, St Aloysius College, in
association with Community Radio Sarang 107.8MHz and Election Commission of
India - Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP)
cell of Dakshina Kannada district will hold a weeklong voter awareness
campaign in the city from Wednesday. Thulasi Maddineni, CEO, DK zilla
panchayat will launch the campaign.

She will interact with listeners of community radio Sarang 107.8MHz in a
live phone-in session addressing their queries about upcoming elections
from 10am to 11am on Wednesday. She will brief the students of mass
communication on protocol to be followed with regard to the Lok Sabha
elections. After this, pledge to vote fairly and fearlessly will be
administered to students of St Aloysius College.

"During the course of the campaign, students of mass communication will be
creating awareness on the elections, requesting every person to exercise
their right to vote without any fear or bias. The aim of this campaign is
to generate a record breaking voter percentage in the educated district of
Dakshina Kannada," said Sudeep Shenoy, event manager for Pratijna at St
Aloysius College.

"The guidelines and content for this programme is unique as it has been
formulated by SVEEP programme of ECI, which is totally apolitical with no
support or bias to any political party or candidate. The entire event is
funded by students themselves, to avoid any obligation to any party," said
Laxmi Shenoy, faculty, department of mass communication of the college.

The Sveep programme is being conducted in many other colleges and locations
identified by the committee set up by ECI as well.

"Such an event is need of the hour, as every vote makes a difference. Every
person needs to vote in this election, and they cannot give excuses like
they do not think any candidate is worthy, as with the introduction of NOTA
(None of the Above) option, they have the right to cast negative votes,
which in itself is a powerful tool for change. Thus, the event is a call to
every individual in Dakshina Kannada district to spend a few minutes of
their time for the nation," said Jeena Elizabeth John, event manager for
Pratijna.

The culmination of weeklong event will be held at City Centre Mall from 3pm
