May I encourage those exploring such initiatives to look beyond the facilities provided by commercial services for such networking and community building? There is a genuinely free, free software built, facility called Diaspora (diasp.org) where you are at liberty to chose existing networks or create your own, inviting fellow community members to join. Take control of the information you share, try to minimise what you give away in return for availing 'free' services. Remember that some, even many, of the people you invite will be being exposed to such media for the first time, and are likely completely unaware of the potential risks of casual information sharing. A quick glance at the comparative privacy policies of Facebook and Diaspora will surprise you. Sharing need not mean losing.

As it happens, there is an annual 'event' held called 'Take Back the Tech', designed for women to explore and take advantage of empowering facilities presently existing within Infotech and to take charge of ensuring the availability of an unbiased communication infrastructure (an ideal, but that is what we are about, isn't it?). Perhaps unwittingly, the current male-dominated mindshare in engineering and policy has already given away a lot, too much, but we can get it back. 

Part of that effort is being and staying engaged, also to use, comment, and be part of a global effort to make such tools and services freely available - especially when there's so much out there that's 'free', but not a free lunch.
