An interesting take on the use of 'radio'
but more like a regional music app - albeit free

DEHRADUN: One can now listen to Kumaoni and Garhwali folk songs on
smartphones while sitting in any part of the world. In a novel initiative
aimed at promoting indigenous music from the hills, a member of
Uttarakhand's diaspora in the US has launched an android application titled
'Uttarakhand Radio', a first of its kind free of cost mobile application,
during India Day celebrations at New York on Sunday.
Aimed at bringing the regional music of Uttarakhand, current affairs and
much more onto users' mobile phones, the internet radio application also
aims to be used as an educational platform to teach regional languages of
the state.
Sailesh Upreti, the man behind the idea said, "The application is the first
of its kind and users can not only enjoy the state's regional music 24x7
but also share their views, concerns or knowledge related to Uttarakhand by
sending audio recordings via Whatsapp. Shortlisted audios will be played by
the application administrators on the radio."
"By launching this application, we tried to pay tribute to the state's
greatest poet, Girish Chandra Tiwari, popularly known as 'Girda', whose 5th
death anniversary was observed on August 22. We want to dedicate this
application to all the natives of Uttarakhand who live around and outside
India," said Upreti.
Interestingly, the content of the application would be administered from
the US as well as Almora. Local inputs would be regularly taken for sharing
through the application.
After receiving an overwhelming response over social networking platforms
where the application was being promoted, the developers are excited about
the future and are planning to work on IOS and Windows platforms for the
application.
