While a rational consciousness grasps many truths, Gananath Obeyesekere
believes an even richer knowledge is possible through a bold confrontation
with the stuff of visions and dreams. Spanning both Buddhist and European
forms of visionary experience, he fearlessly pursues the symbolic,
nonrational depths of such phenomena, reawakening the intuitive, creative
impulses that power greater understanding.

Rabindranath Tagore's sojourn in England as an 18-year old marked the
beginning of a lifelong exploration of the duality, India-West. His
observations on India’s encounter with the West remain unsurpassed in depth
of insight. In his reflections on this encounter, Rabindranath was incisive
on the disquiets afflicting both the Indian and Western civilizations,
disquiets that have become raging discontents in our own times.



Psychoanalyst and writer, *Sudhir Kakar* is currently Adjunct Professor of
Leadership at INSEAD, Fontainbleau. He is also Kosambi Visiting Research
Professor, Goa University, Fellow at Centre for Advanced Study in
Humanities, University of Cologne and Senior Homi Bhabha Fellow. His many
honors include the Kardiner Award of Columbia University, Germany’s Goethe
Medal and Order of Merit, Boyer Prize of the American Anthropological
Association and Nehru and ICSSR National Fellowships.



He is the author of eighteen books of non-fiction and four novels and his
books have been translated into twenty-two languages around the world.

Sri Lankan scholars and the Buddhist public generally believe that
Portuguese influence after 1506 was characterized by a long period of
Catholic proselytization and religious intolerance in the maritime regions
of the island. What is little known is that by contrast, the kingdom of
Kandy in the central region under the rule of King Vimaladhramasuriya and
his successors (1591 - 1731) was characterized by religious tolerance and
the welcoming of Europeans and other immigrants into the kingdom.



This lecture addresses the open cosmopolitanism of that period that
provides an alternative vision of the past and for the future for Sri Lanka.



*Gananath Obeyesekere* is Professor of Anthropology, Emeritus at Princeton
University.  He has worked on Buddhism and popular religions and on such
esoterica as the voyages of Captain Cook and on ‘cannibal talk’. His main
theoretical interests are on social theory and psychoanalytic anthropology.



*Rajeev Bhargava *is Director of the Centre for the Study of Developing
Societies.
