The Open Circle is an artists initiative based in Bombay which seeks a
creative engagement with contemporary political issues.

Open Circle 2001-2002 will focus on the imposition of economic reforms, and
their impact -especially on the working class, to enable an examination of
the conjuncture of discrimination and pressures encountered by developing
nations under the newer guise of globalisation. The imposition of these
reforms as studies show, have a wide range of detrimental effects, from
civil wars to environmental hazards, social and economic breakdowns. Either
there is a total collapse of the national economy or the rich get richer,
and the complacent middle classes hide their heads in the sands of
consumerism. For them the consequences of the crisis are deferred or will
perhaps even evade them in their lifetime. In both cases, the most direct
and adverse effects of these changes are felt by the working classes. The
program is structured in three phases. The first phase is a study circle,
the second and third phase will be international symposiums and work-shops.

The first session which will be on the 31st of July 2001, Tuesday.

Venue: Kamala Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental
Studies. Vidyanidhi Marg, Juhu scheme, off 10th road, Mumbai--400049.
tel--6700918.

The time schedule for the session is from 17.00hrs to 19 hrs, at the audio
visual room.

The evening will begin with performance by Shahir Sheikh Jainu Chand and
Kesar Chand, followed by a presentation of sound piece, slides and lecture
by Ms Neera Adarkar ( architect, activist ) and Ms Meera Menon ( unionist ,
activist ).

Both the speaker have worked extensively on the social and cultural history
of the Girangaon- the working class belt in the heart of Bombay. They have
an active involvement in the recuperation of the fabric of the area.

The lecture is open to all.
