M S Harilal/ Sarai Independent Fellow 2007/ fifth posting/ Ayurvedic
Manufacturing- Study sources

In this posting, I briefly deal with the major sources of data and
information used for my study as suggested by Vivek.

Sources for the period1830s to 1920s

The official documents from Travancore dewan and various notifications of
Travancore vaidyasalas department from Regional archives, Thiruvananthapuram
and National archives New Delhi. Secondary sources in the regional language
(for eg, NVK Varier (1980), Keralathinte Ayurveda Charithram (The history of
Kerala ayurveda), Kottakkal Publishing House, Various notes and journals
from Kottakkal etc and others (eg. Siddique M Z (1962) "Medicine in medieval
India" Indian Journal of History and Science, Nagam Ayya (1907), Travancore
state manual etc).

Sources for 1920s onwards

Mainly depends on the secondary sources and for the beginning of 20th
century, information from archives and Travancore annual reports and Reports
on administration of the public health department have been used. The
various taskforce reports on ayurveda (in the pre and post independence
period) are available in Central secretariat library, New Delhi. There were
also a few secondary sources used as background papers for the analysis of
the period.

Study of Organized Manufacturing

The data for this part of the study is base on company visits. The basic
information collected from various organizations like Ayurvedic
Manufacturing Association of India (AMAI), Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturers
association (ADMA), ISM &H New Delhi, Various drug Controller offices and
Ayurvedic Colleges and Kerala State Industrial development Boards and Kerala
Infrastructure Regulation Authority.

Company-wise information from personal visits to the companies and from
their balance sheets, annual reports and personal interviews and some of
them from Department of company registrars, Kerala (where company has to
file their account details for registration annually). For the case studies
a detailed analysis from other documents (especially historical policies,
patent filing all will be collected). Websites and Brochures of the
companies were also informative. (CMIE PROWESS data source gives information
about very few companies)

Unorganized sector

A detailed interview and participatory observation would be done with a
selected number of Traditional Vaidyas for the details.

(If any reader requires a detailed bibliography, I would be happy to send it
to the email IDs)

Harilal
