Dear friends,

I am pleased to invite you to the our upcoming talk entitled “Dealing with Diversity. Comparative Reflections between Europe, Austria and India”
by renowned German Studies scholar Prof. Anil Bhatti.

This talk takes places within the EUNIC Lecture Series 2011/2012.

When? Friday, 2 March 2012 at 6:30 pm

Where? India International Centre Annexe, Lecture Room II (Basement), 40 Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi 110 003

ABSTRACT:
Both Europe and India are characterized by “pluriculturalism”, a phenomenon increasingly pertinent as a result of globalization, which raises questions about linguistic diversity, co-existence of religions, migration, and processes of social in- and exclusion.

In this lecture, Prof. Bhatti will examine how the issue of diversity is reflected, for example, in literary texts and translations, but also in the development of cityscapes and cultural memory. In doing so, he will take a comparative approach between India, Europe and Austria, and reflect on some crucial cultural developments in this context. How have Europe and India dealt with the challenges arising from “pluriculturalism” and what can they learn from each other?

ABOUT PROF. ANIL BHATTI:
Prof. Bhatti is among the most notable contemporary German Studies scholars in India. For more than 25 years, he served as professor at the Centre for German Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where his research focused on comparative literature and culture studies between India and the German-speaking countries. During his very active career, he has established a close network of relationships with counterparts in the German-speaking world through guest professorships, among others at the universities of Vienna and Graz, and involvement in scientific advisory councils in Europe. Throughout his career, Prof. Bhatti took an interest in promoting novel, constructive approaches to meeting the challenges of multicultural societies in a globalised world. To this end, many of Prof. Bhatti’s publications deal with multiculturalism, and in particular transnational identities and pluri-lingualism. In 2011, Prof. Bhatti served as guest professor at the Center of Excellence - Cultural Foundations of Integration at the University of Konstanz, Germany.

I am looking forward to seeing you there!
