[Urbanstudy] quite a 'land'mark judgement

with regard to the HC ruling on the mill land sale, yes, it is quite a 'land'mark judgement that goes some way towards scuttling maharashtra CM vilasrao deshmukh's attempts to please the builder's lobby and other politically helpful connections. it was at his intervention that, in 2001, the regulatory act governing how much land should go for low-cost housing and open spaces was amended to leave a far greater chunk in the commercial developers' hands..it's a good slap in the face for the state government that was only too happy to look the other way as crazy amounts of money were paid for the land while so many mill workers have died of starvation after being put out of their jobs with no where to go
 
i think the judgement also gives a huge boost to all those organisations that are making a concerted effort to save the cities they are in from the hands of pure-profit driven corporations..
 
what remains to be seen now is how the supreme court appeal goes and whether the not-so-squeaky-clean BMC and MHADA will actually use the land that they get in the right manner..it's gonna be a long battle..
