AGE OLD TREES ARE BEING FELLED IN KOLKATA'S HERITAGE LOCALES :

Age old trees are being cut down in the Kolkata Municipal area with nod from the Pollution Control Dept. But planting of saplings as per the department's' guidelines are not being followed, as there is no monitoring authority. Municipal authorities have admitted that hundreds of trees have been felled down in the city at the Kashimbazar Palace, a heritage site in the Rajabazar area near Sealdah Railway station.  

 

The report says that the Municipal authorities had no information that tree felling orders were granted to the people behind this and that too in a 'heritage' locale. Proper monitoring infrastructure is lacking in the Municipality was what the authority added. 

 

The guideline for tree felling says that minimum 5 saplings has to be planted against felling of one tree. The Government notification says that neither the Pollution Controll Dept. nor the Municipality has the right to pass tree felling orders. A committee was formed by the State Government to ensure that no trees would be cut without proper information and without proper a N.O.C. from both the departments. But strictures are not being followed.

P.S.-This is not the first time that this has happened in Kolkata with authority's approval and with the Government's 'overlooking'. With lack of  communicaton between the Government Depts, its the old trees which are getting the axe. 

Can one, two or even five Eucalyptus saplings replace a hundred year (or more) old Banyan or Pipul tree?

Who cares, as long as the development bandwagon keeps rolling!
