*A* *Short account based on a phone conversation with Sr Cleatus Ms radha
Goswamy *

Dozens of people including women, children and men were injured in a police
action against a group of people living in Mukundpur, Janta Vihar. Initial
information suggests that this colony comes under the unauthorized colony
list. On 04 June around 50 houses were demolished here, and there was not
protest from people. On 6 July 11 A.M. a police party came for making ground
for demolitions. In the ensuing protest five vehicles belonging to police
were damaged. Following this police fired in the air and beat up the
scattered crowed, injuring many. Police pulled out people from the houses
specially women were also badly beaten up and a woman’s leg was broken. Even
now, 11am on 7 July police is rounding up people and taking them to police
station as per eyewitness accounts. There is still police presence. Almost
100 men are in police custody. This colony is here since last 20 years. The
demolition party served a notice that demolitions is done to clear the gram
sabha land, signed by Civil lines Kuldeep kishore BDO north, with no. Som cc
A24, As per latest inputs people are moving away from the site fearing
police atrocities.

Many of the families, seems to have purchased land under power of attorney.
Some of them are those who purchased houses/live in rent following a series
of previous demolitions, those who were not yet given an alternate site by
the authorities. It is almost clear that they were cheated. Bureaucracy is
not interested in addressing this aspect. This is quite indicative that
people living in unauthorized colonies, who are not able to resist the
attacks against their right to life and shelter falls to demolitions.

*Note*

* *

A demolition of settlements of urban poor, branding them as illegal is one
of the ways to beautify the city at the cost of human life. Commonwealth
games and other reasons are frequently cited and the middle class per se in
Delhi is supporting these attacks on people. So is the Media and some of the
NGO are supporting such drives. Till now people, who are victims of
demolitions since 2000 are not provided alternate housing in a proper way,
and those who got facilities amount to less that 40% of those affected.
Families from Jahangirpuri, whose houses were demolished in 2006, for whom
we are fighting a case, are also among the affected in Balaswa.

*Request *

To help organize a immediate dialogue with the state and Human Rights
bodies, so that right to life and dignified living is restored and the
people come back and start their normal life.
