Context:
Indian cities are increasingly becoming worse places to live in. Our
cities are today marked with rising pollution, dwindling green spaces,
dearth of basic amenities & services, shortage of affordable housing
and a complete decay of public spaces and infrastructure.
“Mumbai is a great city but a terrible place”- A renown architect.
The city of Mumbai exemplifies the characteristic downfall of our
cities. Over 60 % of the city’s population lives in slums. The city
has one of the lowest levels of floor space per person. The
infrastructure and the public spaces of the city seem to be crumbling
each passing day.
Defining Livable City:
The quality of life of the city is shaped by its access to good
quality infrastructure (water, energy, transportation); food; clean
air; affordable housing; and the quality of its public space and
parks.
Making Mumbai Livable
This Panel discussion looks at ideas that can make our cities a better
place to live in; special emphasis is given to the intangible idea of
the public realm as a way to revive cities.Architect and Urbanist
Dhiru Thadani (Charter Member of the Congress of New Urbanism) will
also be presenting a plan to “Make Mumbai a Better place to live” .
