 Architecture is a powerful instrument to influence social change. A growing number of architects is recently engaged in underserved communites all over the world, working on projects that respond to local needs. Using design as a tool these architects present a shift in the dialogue between architecture and society, redefining the relevance of the profession itself. Anna Heringer designed and built with the local community the award-winning METI school project in Bangladesh, Andres Lepik was the Curator of the exhibtion Small Scale, Big Change in The Museum of Modern Art (2011) in which Heringer‘s project was featured among ten other projects worldwide. Both will discuss the responsibility of the architect for the global society. 
 
ANNA HERINGERis an architect from Linz, Austria. Her design practice focuses on the use of local materials, skills and knowledge to create buildings that are distinctly from their place. Her school in Bangladesh built from mud and bamboo was featured in the Small Scale, Big Change exhibit at the MoMa in New York. Heringer undertakes the study of construction methods based on natural materials and human labour, focusing on their impact on society, environment and building culture.
 
Andres Lepikhas been a curator in Berlin as well as New York. He had recently created the exhibit Small Scale, Big Change at the MoMa. An expert in museum projects that tell the story of architecture and those who create it, he oversaw two ground breaking projects in Berlin which looked closely at the work of Mies van der Rohe and Rem Koolhaas. His is interested in examining the social engagement movement in architecture. 
 
They both are currently LOEB Fellows at GSD Harvard.
 
Rahul Mehrotraan architect, urbanist and researcher, recently authored Architecture in India Since 1990 (Pictor, 2011). He is professor and chair at GSD, Harvard University, with a Mumbai based architectural practice.
