I am interested in organizing a panel for the Sixth Biennial Urban History Association Conference, to be held in New York City on October 26-28.

I am organizing a panel focused on the spatial or cultural histories of intermediate, secondary, or smaller cities in Asia from the nineteenth to early twentieth century.  The study of Asian cities has long been dominated, much like the region itself, by large metropolises that transcend the local and regional and become 'global cities'.  This panel seeks to further a developing trend in urban studies/urban history, and shift the scalar focus to the cities, spaces, and experiences that lie between the 'global cities' and the 'local town'.  Thus, I welcome papers that deal in some way with the question of how to write histories of intermediate, secondary, or smaller cities.  How does a shift in scalar perspective change our understanding of urban history, or the larger historical dynamics (e.g. colonialism, nationalism, modernity, etc.) in which the city is embedded?  Can we theorize the small, intermediate, or secondary city as a distinct category?

In order to submit a panel proposal, I will need, according to the call for papers, "a one-page abstract of each paper, and a one or two page c.v. for each participant."  I would like to have submissions by next Friday, March 9th.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
