Architecture and Ideology

25 July to 9 August, 2013 

(Thursdays and Fridays, 25 & 26 July and  1, 2, 8 & 9 August; 6:30 - 8:30 pm)

This seminar is one more in the 'Ideas in Architecture Theory' series that aim at discussing theory and thinking in the field of architecture; it will discuss some debates and ideas that we see as crucial to the understanding of architecture in contemporary India

Resource scholars include architects, historians and cultural theorists such as Kamu Iyer, Mustansir Dalvi, Ranjit Hoskote, Nancy Adajania, Suprio Bhattacharjee and Kaiwan Mehta.

We look forward to discussing the ideas and contributions of Mulk Raj Anand and Romi Khosla on the subject, probe the 'idea of nation', and the role that engineers and architects played in negotiating this vision and imagination, the debates on labour and craftsmen in the matter, as well as the language and culture of contemporary architectural practices in India

Directions to Arbour:

 


If you are anywhere near Flora Fountain, Central Bank Building, New India Assurance Building, Kandeel Restaurant or Bombay Stock Exchange you are near Arbour. From any of these landmarks find your way to Fort Post Office on Ambalal Doshi Marg (Hamam Street) or Military Cafe, Amrapali and then Milan Coffee House on Nagindas Master Road. On Ambalal Doshi Marg (turning left from Milan Coffee House on Nagindas Master Road) the entrance to Karim Chambers is between two ficus trees, and a panwala nearby. One (east) end of the Ambalal Doshi street is Bombay Stock Exchange the other end first building is Karim Chambers.


OR: On the road that connects Flora Fountain and Kala Ghoda there is New India Assurance building (opposite Standard Chartered Building) with the figures of the farmers in stone - beside that is Kandeel Restaurant with a Juice stall next to it. Come in the lane/gulli next to Kandeel. End of that gulli, across the road you have Amrapali and (to right) Milan Coffee House. From Milan turn left at that corner on the road that leads to Bombay Stock Exchange. On that road first buildng to your left is Karim Chambers - at the entrance are 2 ficus trees, and a panwala.


Come to the first floor and we are right there.
