to invite you for a workshop themed 'Art through the lens' of Empathy'.

Background: The arts have become a 'cool' way for people to engage with
different issues. But do we really see art as it is? What makes a painting
appealing? Why does the world look at art with a mixed sense of awe and
derision?

The lens through which we will look at art is that of empathy. This term
has a number of layers and at the simplest is a feeling of 'connecting'
with a visual. This is the kind of narrative advertising uses, where
'connections' with images are used to sell products.

Everything from a water color painting to a hoarding for cycles comes under
the rubric of visual media. What makes some images stand out for us and
what makes some remain in memory are some things that will be explored
during the workshop.

The broader aim is to talk about the visual and the world of visuals we
live in.

Facilitator: Sumitra Sunder


Sumitra Sunder is a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Advanced
Studies, pursuing a doctorate in the School of Humanities. The broad area
of her work is Visual art and curatorial practices within art and activism.
She has worked with several fine art and cultural Institutions before
commencing doctoral work, including Indira Gandhi National Centre, Khoj
International Artists Association, Apparao Galleries and Eka Cultural
Resources and Research. She has a Masters in Museum Studies from the
National Museum Institute in New Delhi and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the
College of Fine Arts, Chitrakala Parishath in Bangalore.

Her areas of interest include Bangalore and its History, Art and Activism
as well as Popular Culture.

There is no fees for the workshop and is open for everyone, but it will be
great if you inform us in advance about your presence.
