As part of our Urban Workshop Series, the Centre for Policy Research (CPR)
and Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), Delhi, are delighted to invite you
to a Workshop on *The Meaningful City* in India: A Discussion.  *

The Urban Workshop series, held on the last working Tuesday of every month,
has completed a continuous series of forty nine workshops. For the fiftieth
workshop, it is organising a panel discussion that reflects the
multi-disciplinary nature of the workshop. It will draw on different
disciplines to address a common question.

Today, in India, the city is arguably becoming a more salient focus of
social inquiry. Historically, cities have been seen as sites of social
emancipation – places where existing mores are questioned. They have also
been centres of political expression, often, strongly enough to lead to
changes in national political systems – a fact that we are often reminded
of in today’s world. Increasingly too, they are being seen as the engines
of growth, the loci around which benefits of agglomeration are driving
increases in economic productivity, often intermingled with their role as
home to the “creative class”. Yet, cities, especially in India, are also
sites where it is often common to find inequality, deprivation and lack of
opportunity.

So, what is the rationale for today’s city in India? शहर का मकसद क्या है?
What kinds of meaning do city dwellers invest in and find in their city?
How does this meaning differ across different residents of the city? How
has this rationale evolved over time? These are the some of the questions
that will be posed to the panel, and it is hoped that this will provoke a
lively exchange of views.

शहरी कार्यशाला श्रृंखला

भारत में शहर का  मकसद *: *एक चर्चा

हर महीने के अंतिम मंगलवार को आयोजित होने वाले शहरी कार्यशाला श्रृंखला की
उनचास कार्यशालाएं पूरी हो गयीं हैं । इसी श्रंखला के अंतर्गत पचासवे
कार्यशाला के उपलक्ष पर एक चर्चा का आयोजन किया जा रहा है जो इस श्रंखला के
विशेष स्वरुप पर आधारित है । यह चर्चा विभिन्न विषयों के सहारे एक मूल प्रश्न
का उत्तर देने का प्रयास करेगी।

आज, भारत में, शहर सामजिक संरचना को समझने के प्रयासों का एक मुख्य केंद्र बन
गया है। लम्बे समय से शहर को सामाजिक सशक्तिकरण के स्थान के रूप में देखा गया
है – एक ऐसी जगह जहाँ सामाजिक रीती-रिवाजों पर सवाल उठाएं जाते हैं l
यहराजनैतिक अभिव्यक्ति का केन्द्र भी रहें हैं,
जो अक्सर राष्ट्र की राजनैतिक व्यवस्था में बदलाव लाने में सक्षम हैं । इस
सच्चाई का अहसास हमें वर्त्तमान में अक्सर होता है ।  इन्हें विकास के इंजन के
रूप में देखा जा रहा है जिनके इर्द गिर्द आर्थिक उत्पादकता में  वृद्धि हो रही
है और इन्हें अक्सर "रचनात्मक वर्ग" के साथ भी जोड़ कर देखा जाता है । फिर
भी, विशेष
रूप से भारत में, शहरों को ऐसे स्थानों के रूप में भी देखा जाता है जहाँ
असमानता, आभाव, और अवसरों की कमी का होना भी बहुत सामान्य है l

तो, आज भारत में शहर का  मकसद  क्या   है?  शहर से लोगों की क्या उम्मीदें हैं
और शहर से उनको क्या मिलता है?  क्या शहर के विभिन्न निवासियों के मकसद अलग-अलग
हैं? समय के साथ ये मकसद कैसे बदला है? ऐसे कुछ सवाल पैनल के समक्ष रखे
जायेंगे और उम्मीद है कि उससे एक जीवंत चर्चा की शुरुआत हो पायेगी।

। *डॉ. **अवधेनद्र** शरण *विकासशील समाज अध्ययन केंद्र के साथ एक इतिहासकार है।*
डा. हिमांशु* जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय, नई दिल्ली में एक अर्थशास्त्री है

यह कार्यशाला सोन्त्रे दे सियन्स हूमेन (सीएसएच), नई दिल्ली और
प्रणीतिअनुसंधान केंद्र(सीपीआर), नई दिल्ली द्वारा
आयोजित शहरी कार्यशालाओं की श्रृंखला में पचासवां है. यह कार्यशालायें शहर के
विकास से संबंधित मुद्दों पर सार्वजनिक चर्चा शुरु करने और उनके प्रशासन,
संस्कृति, अर्थव्यवस्था, समाज और राजनीति सहित सभी पहलुओं को समझने की कोशिश
