Workshop: ‘Inhabited Pasts: The Many Lives of Monuments in Delhi’
Date: Thursday 20 August 2015
Venue: Goethe-Institut New Delhi, Max Müller Bhavan, 3 Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi.
This open, one-day workshop will discuss the inhabitation of monuments in Delhi. In an attempt to depart from the notion of the monument as a physically static and socially-sterile edifice, this workshop will consider monuments as social and spatial canvases; providing shelter, solitude, the possibility of privacy and romantic, devotional and commercial opportunity. Papers are invited that explore a range of issues associated with the permanent and transitory inhabitation of monuments in the city, now and in the past. How are monuments animated by social interactions, negotiations and conflicts? The definition of the monument may include sites subject to legislated protection as well as structures which are part of localised registers of memory and history. How do occupants conceive of their rights to and within the spaces of the monument? How do conservation authorities respond, both in disciplining publics at the monument and in attempting to uncouple the monument from its immediate physical and social environs? The workshop is an opportunity to consider alternative understandings of the monument, and of heritage, that might owe more to understandings of these structures as dynamic spaces of resort than to the cultural precepts of modern conservation practise.
Papers will be 25 minutes long to leave time for discussion.
