BENGALURU: In a major breakthrough for the citizens against a controversial
steel flyover, approved by the Karnataka government, the National Green
Tribunal has granted interim injunction. The tribunal seeks the state to
file a detailed environmental impact assessment before going ahead with the
work.

Two Bengalureans who petitioned the NGT are N Mukund from Citizen Action
Forum and V Balasubramanyam, former additional chief secretary in the
state. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MP of Rajya Sabha said, "I welcome NGT
granting an interim injunction on BDA's Steel Flyover project. This
petition and interim order, open the door to a detailed scrutiny of the
environmental impact of government's action on the steel flyover project."

"This also puts a brake on the unholy and brazen rush of this government to
award and start the contract despite the visible and widespread opposition
by citizens. Yet again, it is the judiciary that steps into protect
interests of city and citizens from an insensitive and apathetic government
that seems to be more driven by vested interests than the interests of its
own people", said Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
