About the talk:
The talk will discuss leading examples of institutional innovation in Brazil that have pushed technological advances and regional experimentation in many industries. It will cover examples of such innovation as well as laying out some neo-Schumpeterian approaches to technological learning and its development challenges. The talk will draw on the speaker's collaborative research "Farms versus Firms" with Prof. Smita Srinivas, at Columbia University's Technological Change Lab (TCLab), and a forthcoming book discussing the cases of Embraer, Embrapa, and Petrobras, with Prof. Albert Fishlow while at the Institute for Latin American Studies, Columbia University.

Speaker bio: Dr. Jose Eustaquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho is a Research Analyst at IPEA.  He lectures in the Graduate Agribusiness Program at the University of Brasilia (PROPAGA/UnB). In the federal government, he develops and evaluates public policies on technological innovations in agriculture. In 2014, Dr. Vieira Filho was a visiting scholar at the Technological Change Lab (TCLab) and at the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS), Columbia University. Dr Viera Filho holds a PhD in Economics (2009) from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), conducting a part of thesis studies at the Université de Bordeaux in the Groupe de Recherche en Économie Théorique et Appliquée (GREThA). He obtained a Master in Agricultural Economics (2004) from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), trained in Public Administration at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), and earned a BA in Economics (2000) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). In 2013, he was awarded the "Ruy Miller Paiva Prize" from the Brazilian Society of Economics, Business and Rural Sociology (SOBER).
