DAT is digital audio (magnetic) tape, which gives digitally recorded
sound quality, well up to (and quite possibly beyond) broadcast
standards. The advantage of this technology is largely overtaken by
subsequent developments in digital minidisc, a format that gives the
convenience of opto-electronic digitil recording with the ease of use
of non-linear editing.
If all sound will be transferred to computer memory (hard disks) for
storage prior to editing, then the choice of recording medium is not
critical, since transfer processes for both are linear.
In the spectrum of digital recording, I tend to think the DAT is best
suited for backup, rather than field recording. This is a very
computer-centric viewpoint, based on the advances made in computer
storage (DAT), as against the convenience of a small field recorder
that also offers superior editing on the fly (the MD).
