  Kindly inform all community radio activists and volunteers that Maharastra social forum is holding thier meeting in Ahmednagar on 16th march to 18th march. Your presence will help promote this cause and all volunteers can come and attend. 
  In nairobi the WSF had a radio narrowcast and showing people the technology options and the proximity ot running and owning the community radio system at the grassroot level will promote this cause.

Students at the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, have found a new way
to stay connected on the campus -- through internet radio. The radio is used
only within the campus limits for communication, entertainment and
educational purpose. "With the placement season ahead, the radio will be of
good use for the students to exchange information on varied areas, discuss
issues and keep everyone informed on the companies that come to the campus,"
says Bhuvana Ramalingam, director communication, ISB. The total investment
in setting up a radio station is around Rs 55,000 with a personal computer,
a headphone and a speaker set. The songs are streamed from the Internet
using the local area network (LAN) that has a bandwidth of 100 Mbps in the
campus. It can be accessed from any corner of the campus. The institute has
given the students a room which serves as a radio station. In the west,
internet radio is a well-known concept. But in India it is still to catch
up. For instance, Mundu Radio, an offering from Geodesic, a provider of
uniform IM (instant messaging) platform, is exploring opportunities with
Indian universities and colleges to provide them with an internet radio
platform on mobile handsets. Says Anand Virani, associate VP, Geodesic,
"Student community is our target sector for Mundu radio. In a demographic
analysis done by us, we found that of the 1 lakh downloads, more than 40 per
cent were from India and 35 per cent users who registered were in the age
group of 18 to 25 years." There are more than 50K Radio Stations currently
broadcasting over the Internet. But to listen to Internet Radio, one is

Hi,

As you said, the task of building an online repository can be quite 
colossal. Attempts have been made, such as the OpenKnowledge eNRICH 
software by NIC -- 
http://sync.openknowledge.net:8080/eNRICH/index.do?siteid=103 -- but I 
have reservations on the usability of such systems.

If we are thinking only about short video content or audio podcasts, 
then youtube, blogs, and social networking websites such as Orkut would 
be ideal. All these companies are already doing the work for us -- why 
reinvent the wheel! Organizations like Witness -- www.witness.org -- are 
already doing this by publishing their documentaries on youtube.

I can imagine that such public domain systems will not be suitable for 
specific tasks that we might want to handle, but let's look at those 
separately then. Are we clear on what the repository should be used for? 
I can volunteer to help.

Hello Tripta, Fred and others

Its been a very interesting discussion about the repository and the
ideas discussed are very exciting. In this context I thought you all may
find of interest one of IT for Change's workshops held last year titled,
Audio Visual Resources for Development: Moving towards Open Paradigms,
held in June 2006 in Bangalore, where we had a group of development film
makers, funders, and organisations using development films in their
interventions.

As a follow up to the deliberations from the workshop, we are in the
process of setting up a open content repository and distribution system.
The repository www.content-commons.in is beginning with video content in
Kannada language which is directly useful to community groups in
Karnataka involved in different areas of development activity. 

The website is not yet public, and will be up by March 2007. 

Each video will be indexed, sorted by themes etc, and a short help-sheet
about its possible uses, cumulatively including feedback from user
groups using the material will be provided. 

The content would be available under any of the open licenses applicable
to video content.

All these videos will be available for direct downloading. Those who
prefer that their videos may be distributed also through a facilitative
physical distribution system (through couriers) which is also being put
up, we will be willing to do so, at basic cost of providing a video CD
(without any overheads). 

On an aside, we also produce community radio content in Kannada for our
'Kelu Sakhi' (listen, friend) radio program, and this audio content will
also be put online for free downloads under a CC licence.

Please do let us know your comments/ feedback and information on
agencies that may be interested in sharing their films. Hope to be in
continued dialogue on this.
