LUDHIANA: People living in and around city will soon hear a new announcement
on their radio sets: "You are listening to Guru Nanak Girls College (GNGC)
FM Radio". GNGC is starting FM community radio station from its campus. The
first of its kind in the state, GNGC FM community radio will be inaugurated
on July 1.
Contrary to other FM radios, which only focus on English and Hindi, it will
also air programmes in Punjabi. "We want to reduce the gap between
communities so we will air Punjabi programmes as well," GNGC president
Gurveer Singh said.
In December 2002, the Centre had approved a policy for the grant of licences
for setting up community radio stations in well-established educational
institutions.
Inspired by this initiative, Gurveer Singh had applied for licence around a
year back and received it two months back. College principal has been
appointed the director of radio and GNGC management with the investment of
Rs 8 lakh has set up a modern, well-equipped studio.
To get all latest information for the radio station, the college has hired a
team of professionals, who were imparted training at Commonwealth
Educational Media Centre for Asia, New Delhi.
The FM will start its day with a religious programme at 6.15 am and will
later air programmes for around 16.30 hours till 10.30 pm. All sorts of
programmes related to health and environment, rural life, history and
awareness, Punjabi literature, trade, fashion focus, science culture, art
and life and students' corner will be aired, but the main focus will be
promotion of new talent.
To generate revenue, FM will get sponsorships from government agencies while
college authorities have got permission to air ads for five minutes every
hour.
