HIGH PROFILE WOMAN RADIO BOSS MURDERED

Reporters Without Borders today voiced deep shock
at the murder overnight of Zakia Zaki, a leading
figure among Afghanistan's independent
journalists.

Two armed men broke into the family home of the
head of radio Sada-e-Sulh (Peace Radio) in
Jabalussaraj, in the northern province of Parwan,
and gunned her down in front of her two-year-old
son, firing seven bullets before fleeing.

Zakia Zaki, who was 35, had run the radio since
it was founded in 2001 and was also head of a
local school. She had received several death
threats after openly criticising warlords and the
Taliban.

"Whether this savage act was linked to her work
as a journalist or her civic responsibilities, it
is vital that those who responsible for this
murder should be quickly identified and
punished," the worldwide press freedom
organisation said.

"We urge President Hamid Karzai to commit all the
necessary resources to ensure a successful
outcome to the investigation and to leave no
stone unturned." An investigation has been opened
but no particular lead was being given priority.

"The head of Sada-e-Sulh had received several
threats and her struggle for freedom of
expression and women's liberation were
exemplary," the organisation said.

Zakia Zaki liked to refer to Sada-e-Sulh as "a
community home for the residents, the only place
where they dare to express themselves freely". It
is the only independent radio in Parwan province
and broadcasts mainly on issues such as human
rights, education and women's rights.

The radio's staff face constant harassment. One
of its journalists, Abdul Qudoos, spent a year in
prison after his arrest in February 2006 for an
alleged murder attempt, on the basis of a false
accusation from a woman deputy Samia Sadat. Zaki
was Samia Sadat's main rival at legislative
elections and Sadat had tried to get the radio
shut down, viewing it as an instrument of
propaganda of her political adversaries.

In an interview with a Reporters Without Borders'
delegation which visited Afghanistan in 2002,
Zaki said she had received death threats from
several Mujahideen chiefs. Local leaders of the
Jamiat-e-islami had banned her from interviewing
women in the street for her broadcasts.

A portrait of the journalist was included in a
documentary called "If I stand up"", co-produced
by UNESCO, on International Women's Day in March
2005 as one of four eminent women journalists in
Afghan society. She was a member of the
Constituent Assembly in 2003.

Reporters sans frontières est profondément
choquée par l'assassinat de Zakia Zaki, l'une des
figures emblématiques du journalisme indépendant
afghan, le 5 juin 2007 à Jabalussaraj (province
de Parwan, Nord). Directrice de la radio
Sada-e-Sulh (Radio de la Paix) depuis sa création
en 2001, Zakia Zaki était également directrice
d'une école à Jabalussaraj.

"Que cet acte barbare soit lié au travail de
journaliste ou aux engagements civiques de Zakia
Zaki, il est impératif que les auteurs soient
identifiés et punis au plus vite. Nous demandons
au président Hamid Karzaï de déployer tous les
moyens nécessaires pour que l'enquête aboutisse
et qu'aucune piste ne soit négligée. La
directrice de Sada-e-Sulh avait été menacée à
plusieurs reprises. Le combat de Zakia Zaki en
faveur de la liberté d'expression et de
l'émancipation féminine était exemplaire", a
affirmé Reporters sans frontières.

Dans la nuit du 5 au 6 juin 2007, deux hommes non
identifiés ont pénétré au domicile familial de la
journaliste à Jabalussaraj. Ils l'ont tuée de
sept balles, sous les yeux de son fils âgé de
deux ans. Les tueurs ont ensuite pris la fuite.
Une enquête a été ouverte, mais pour le moment
aucune piste n'est privilégiée.

Zakia Zaki, 35 ans, aimait à dire que Sada-e-Sulh
était "une maison communautaire pour les
habitants, le seul endroit où ils osent
s'exprimer librement". Sada-e-Sulh est l'unique
radio indépendante dans la province de Parwan.
Les émissions sont principalement consacrées aux
droits de l'homme et à l'éducation.

L'équipe de Sada-e-Sulh a régulièrement été
harcelée. L'un des journalistes, Abdul Qudoos, a
passé un an en prison pour rien, après avoir été
faussement accusé par la députée Samia Sadat. Il
avait été arrêté en février 2006 pour une
supposée tentative d'assassinat. Zakia Zaki avait
été la principale adversaire de Samia Sadat lors
des élections législatives. Samia Sadat avait
d'ailleurs tenté de fermer cette radio qu'elle
considérait comme un instrument de propagande au
service de ses adversaires politiques.

Zakia Zaki était notamment connue pour avoir
ouvertement critiqué les chefs de guerre afghans
et les taliban. Dans un entretien avec une
délégation de Reporters sans frontières qui
s'était rendue en Afghanistan en 2002, Zakia Zaki
avait confié qu'elle avait reçu des menaces de
mort de plusieurs chefs moudjahidin. Les chefs
locaux du Jamiat-e-islami lui avaient interdit
d'interviewer des femmes dans la rue. La
journaliste avait également été membre de
l'Assemblée constituante en 2003.

Un reportage sur la journaliste figure dans le
documentaire "If I stand up", coproduit par
l'UNESCO à l'occasion de la Journée
internationale de la femme en mars 2005. Ce film
dresse le portrait de quatre femmes éminentes
dans la société afghane.
